The Roaring 20’s
The world of fashion was one of the most important driving forces in Art Deco design, as never before had fashion undergone such a transformation as it did in the 1920s. After WWI women were more independent, and part of the work force. They wanted clothes which were practical as well as glamourous, and which did not restrict their lifestyles.
The flappers of the 1920s were the trend setters of the day. Often criticised by their elders for their behaviour, they will always be remembered for pushing the boundaries for women, and showing us all how to have a damn good time! Even today putting on a shimmering, tassel or bead covered dress can't fail to have you looking like the bee's knees!
Flapper dresses were tube shaped shift dresses with a dropped waist line - around the hips. They often had jagged hems, and drifted around the knees or even shorter. Stockings would be worn rolled around the knees so when dancing a tantalising glimpse of a girls "gams" or legs could be seen. Women were becoming so much more daring in the 20s, although flappers did have a fairly bad reputation, which they lived up to by staying out late, drinking lots of cocktails, smoking, and applying makeup in public.
You need lots of accessories! Long dangling flapper beads, a compact, lipstick Coupled with a beaded cloche, turban or headband, a mesh purse hanging from the wrist, a cigarette holder and brash red lipstick, a girl was ready for anything.
Makeup was becoming very popular in the 1920s. With the popularity of the silent movies everyone wanted to look like the latest stars like Clara Bow or Bela Lugosi with their dark rimmed eyes and deep red lipstick.
Shoes are the finishing touch. Mary Jane style shoes were worn throughout the 20s, they had a small heel and a strap over the foot, so that they would be comfortable to dance the night away without falling off!
I love that era, hopefully one day I will be invited to a 1920’s party and I can dress up, I do love to dress up. A word about the Men in that era they were dressed to impress very dashing they could make a girl swoon.
