The Glamour of Hollywood

A business was started by Frederick Mellinger inventor of the push-up bra in 1947. Frederick's sold bras, panties, corsets, bedroom slippers, a vast array of hosiery, bridal lingerie, special occasion lingerie, and more. He dressed the stars in the most glamorous under wear and dresses for all Hollywood starlets and women who wanted to be glamorous.

Frederick’s of Hollywood, often misspelled as Fredrick’s of Hollywood, is a lingerie through out the 1950’s and 60’s, Frederick’s continued to invent new lingerie styles, including a pronounced conical bra. During the 1970’s when some women protested society’s prevailing system of gender equity by burning their bras, Frederick Mellinger proclaimed that “the law of gravity will win out.” The store experienced a significant rise in sales shortly thereafter, prompting the company to go public on the New York stock exchange.

In 1981, Frederick’s of Hollywood introduced the thong, a drastic change in style from previous lingerie offerings. The thong became a worldwide success. The company also has a specially designed line of lingerie for ‘full figured’ women.

The store previously housed The Lingerie Museum featuring The Celebrity Lingerie Hall of Fame, which exhibited a collection of underwear worn by Hollywood movie stars, such as one of Madonna's pointy-breasted corsets. Frederick's of Hollywood was the market leader in lingerie until the 1980s, when it was overtaken by Victoria's Secret.

In 1992, Frederick's lingerie museum drew national media attention when it was looted during the Los Angeles riots. Other lingeries stolen in the store was Ava Gardner's bloomers and a push-up bra worn by actress Katey Sagal.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2001. In 2003, it emerged from bankruptcy and was headquartered in Los Angeles. In 2015, the company closed its stores and again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Its brand and online operations were acquired by Authentic Brands Group. The company announced it would be online only.

Very sad as he clothed the Hollywood stars and that was definitely the Glamour Era I saw a catalogue a very old one of the clothes so decadent, they were the days.
